ADVENTURES IN BIG SUR
The bewitching and beautiful wilderness between
Carmel and Monterey on California’s HWY 1 became a
mystical destination for outlaw healers, earthy poets,
literary louches & progressive architects in the mid-20th
Century. TREATS! heads to the misty forests of Big Sur
in search of the mysterious pull of the place, both then
and now, that early Spanish explorers named El Pais
Grande Del Sur.

20 GRUFFUDD, IOAN
Cardiff, Wales, is a long way from the scorching
California desert—but Welshman Ioan Gruffudd fit right
in with his fashionable tough guy swagger. TREATS!
sets up camp in the dusty badlands, Triumph
motorcycle in tow, to show off the latest Varvatos, Dior,
Levi’s, Diesel, All Saints and Prada menswear. “I love
the desert, but I’d never survive a night out there...” the
Cardiff boy charmingly announced at the end of the day.

154 THE FIRST MODERN WOMAN
Early-20th Century Paris was dominated by men—
artists, thinkers, writers, philosophers—but it was a

society a flutter. Novelist, sexual libertine, erotic lighting

The City of Lights with her wit, audaciousness and
scandalous affairs—from singer sensation Josephine
