Treats! Magazine Issue Eight | Page 10

EDITOR’ S LETTER

Hello there! If you’ re new to TREATS!, welcome. And if you’ re a regular reader, yes, it has been a while … but fear not, we’ ve been very busy!
Over the last few months we’ ve been working hard behind the scenes to make TREATS! even better in every regard: better shoots, better writers, better contributors, better social media integration, better … well, you get the picture. More of what you love and a few startling innovations too.
Of course, putting together an issue of TREATS! has always been a complex and sometimes convoluted process. That’ s what happens with labors of love- which, for me, TREATS! always has been and always will be. But, I hope, that’ s also what makes it special. Anyway, you’ ll be hearing( and seeing) more about our progress and plans in the coming months but, for now, suffice to say that I couldn’ t be more excited about what we have coming up. I think you’ re going to really enjoy what lies ahead, beginning with the issue you hold in your hands.
We’ re calling it our“ Hollywood Issue” because there’ s a touch of Tinseltown sprinkled through many of the pages. Starting with our cover star, Lydia Hearst. Or“ Citizen Kane’ s great-granddaughter” as our Editor insists on calling her. Lydia is a woman of many talents – actress, model, blogger and philanthropist being just a few – and Tony Duran’ s shoot captures some of the energy that makes her such a compelling presence.
Hollywood names don’ t come much more iconic than Eastwood. So let us introduce you to Scott, the latest member of the family taking residence on the big screen. He’ ll soon be melting hearts in The Longest Ride, but first you can catch him in our feature shoot( which is something of a Hollywood homage itself- see if you recognize what sixties classic we’ re riffing on …).
Completing our trio of Hollywood dynasties is Mariel Hemingway’ s daughter( or Ernest Hemingway’ s great grand-daughter, if you prefer) Langley Fox, whose art has already attracted attention from the likes of Marc Jacobs. We’ re happy to give her work a showcase in this issue.
We also sat down for a chat with legendary photographer Douglas Kirkland. There aren’ t many men who’ ve turned down a proposition from Marilyn Monroe but Douglas explains his reasoning, and shares some of his favorite iconic portraits with us. Rounding out our Hollywood tour is a step back in time to the Sunset Strip of the sixties, home to scenes from The Graduate and Marlowe, not to mention where Joan Collins learned to strip!
It’ s not all retro though: we step into the future with our‘ Oculus’ shoot, which I believe is the first time a magazine has used virtual reality technology to create a fully immersive photo realistic experience. Those of you who made it to the TREATS! Villa for our exclusive 3-day Oscar weekend event will have witnessed firsthand how spectacular that was. But if you weren’ t there, you can at least still enjoy Kesler Tran’ s photos the traditional way, on the pages of this issue.
Elsewhere, we have plenty more of the usual TREATS! obsessions. Paint and lens combine in our‘ 8 Loves’ feature where I collaborate with Los Angeles-based artist Gregory Siff. There’ s also a tremendous profile of enigmatic furniture designer and former model‘ M’( as she likes to be known). Welding hasn’ t looked this sexy since Flashdance.
I’ m running out of space and I haven’ t had a chance to mention many of the other spectacular shoots and beautiful models in the issue. I’ ll just let you discover them for yourself …
Enjoy the issue. I hope you’ ll agree it was worth the wait! STEVE SHAW
